Peter was a native of Bethsaida and worked as a fisherman on Lake Genesareth. His brother Andrew introduced him to Jesus, who gave him the Aramaic name "Kepha" meaning "rock". In the Acts of the Apostles, Peter was the leader of the Christian community. He directed that the vacancy left by Judas Iscariot be filled, addressed the crowd at the Pentecost and did miracles in Christ's name.Tradition states that ater his imprisonment by Herod Agrippa, Peter went to Rome where he became Rome's first Bishop and was crucified during the reign of Nero. St. Peter's feast day is on June 29th. |
