Carmel was born and raised in Montreal and attended Loyola College graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (Sociology) degree in 1972. The following year she moved to Toronto to attend the University of Toronto where she was enrolled in a Master’s Program. This is where she met her husband, Gordon, a native Calgarian. They were married in 1975 but it would be thirteen years and three moves within Canada and the US before they settled in Gord’s “hometown”. She is now proud to call herself a Calgarian! After a career in social services she was a stay-at-home mom to three children. During that time she volunteered in their elementary schools, taught Saturday morning religion classes and sat on various school councils. It was through these experiences that she decided to pursue a new career path. With her youngest just 2 years old she enrolled in the University of Calgary’s Bachelor of Education Degree After program. She attended part-time classes and continued with her volunteer work in the schools. After graduating in 1992 she accepted a teaching position with the Calgary Catholic School Board where she was happily employed until her retirement in 2008. Retirement presents new opportunities and challenges and joining the St. Peter’s Catholic Women’s League has more than fulfilled these expectations. She believes it is an honour to be working with such a hard-working and enthusiastic group of women dedicated to serving God, their parish and community. Carmel truly looks forward to serving as their President for the next two years.
