HOLY ORDERS
Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission Jesus entrusted to the apostles continues to be carried out in the Church. It includes three degrees: deacon, priest, and bishop. Through this sacrament, a man is given the grace and responsibility to serve the Church through preaching, celebrating the sacraments, and leading God’s people.
As the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches:
“No one claims this office for himself; he is called to it by God. Anyone who thinks he recognizes the signs of God’s call to the ordained ministry must humbly submit his desire to the authority of the Church, who has the responsibility and right to call someone to receive orders.” (CCC 440)
