School Age Baptism

“Let the little children come to me.” – Matthew 19:14

Baptism is the first step in a lifelong journey of faith. Through this sacrament, we are welcomed into the Church, cleansed of original sin, and become children of God. For children beyond infancy, Baptism preparation includes additional formation and a deeper understanding of what it means to begin this journey with Christ.

At St. Peter’s, we offer a preparation program for children in grades 2–5 who have not yet been baptized. Older children (grades 6 and up) follow a different program, which you can learn more about on our Sacraments for Teens page.

How Preparation Works

Children preparing for Baptism attend formation sessions in the fall alongside their families. The program includes prayer, learning about the faith, and preparation for the celebration of the sacrament. Children preparing for Baptism are also expected to register for First Reconciliation and First Communion preparation, which begins shortly afterward.

  • Sessions are typically held on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 – 7:15 pm in the Church sanctuary.

  • Godparents/Sponsors are required. Sponsors must be practising, Confirmed Catholics, and meet criteria outlined by the Church.

  • Baptism celebrations are scheduled in mid-October, with options to accommodate families.

Typical Schedule

  • Session 1 – Mid-September

  • Session 2 – Early October

  • Baptism Celebration – Two options offered in mid to late October

Exact dates will be shared with registered families.

Registration

Registration for typically opens in the summer.
